When we understand karma

Screen Shot 2012-06-20 at 8.30.13 PMWhen we understand karma (cause and effect) and that what is happening in our lives is the result of actions we ourselves have taken over innumerable lifetimes, how can we ‘but’ take full responsibility for our lives, and stay mindful of all our actions of body, speech and mind.

And, all our actions start with a thought…

We are doing good and acting skillfully so that we will experience the good consequences of our own skillful actions. We are not doing ‘good’ so that somebody ‘up there’ won’t punish us for being bad — for our ‘sins’. Nobody is keeping score.

First of all we don’t even talk of ‘sin’ in Buddhism. We speak of ignorance as the cause of all unskillful acts. There is no blame and no shame! If we want to have a happier life, we have to start acting in ways that will give us that result.

Buddhism is so logical, and most often we stop our thought processes short, by not following the thread through to the very end so can get a good look at the ‘whole picture’.

Make choices that will move you in the direction of your highest aspirations…
