The mind is not the brain

Screen Shot 2011-09-23 at 2.46.50 PMMost people, especially in the west, equate the mind with the brain. The mind is not the brain. The brain is an organ that the mind uses, just like it uses all the other organs of the body.

The mind is not physical. You cannot touch it, ‘find’ it, or dissect it. We say the mind is empty and luminous.

When the body is no more, and the person has taken their last breath, the mind stream of that person stays around for up to 72 hours.

If we were to point to our ‘self’ — nobody would point to the brain…We would point to our heart. In Buddhism we say that the mind rests in the heart, but it is not the physical heart; it is our spiritual heart, which is in the same area of our heart, but more to the middle.
