We might say–and truly believe–that we’re doing everything we can…

Screen Shot 2013-02-26 at 3.50.48 PM“We might say–and truly believe–that we’re already doing everything we can to avoid suffering.

But if we were to look more closely, we might see that, while hating our pain, we seem to love many of the things that cause it. So there’s a slight disconnect between our intentions and our behavior. It’s like having revulsion for the hangover but finding drinking very appealing.

The problem is, as much as we think we want to be free of our suffering, we keep repeating the patterns of behavior that perpetuate it. Not only are we habituated to these causes, like indulging in fits of anger and jealosy, but we even enjoy the excitement we feel when we give in to them.”
