The importance of lineage

Screen Shot 2013-06-01 at 8.33.35 AMI find it curious how teachers all over the world are telling us we don’t need a guru. That there is no need for this ‘dated’ belief system. They say that all you need to do is to listen to your own inner voice…If this is what these teachers truly believe, why do they keep on teaching…?

The reason we need a guru, one who is here with us now and from whom we can receive instruction and ask questions, is so that we will know if the roadmap we are following will indeed lead us to our final destination!? If we have an erroneous map we will never get to where we are going…!

A teacher In a legitimate spiritual tradition dating back to the original Teacher (be it Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed) is someone who has been handed down the teachings and their intended meaning from their teacher in that lineage, and so on.

None of us lived during the time of these original teachers. The only way we can know if their instructions have the intended meaning, is by knowing it has been handed down from the mouth of one teacher to the next. The instructions are full of idiomatic expressions -from a time and place that we have no knowledge of- and if we allow just ‘anyone’ to interpret these, we will at best end up at the wrong destination…

And, yes…there is still a chance that we will be mislead by a teacher in a traditional lineage – but just like you have a better chance of getting plumbing done right in your home if you hire a person with a license — you have a better chance of finding a true teacher if you look for one in an established lineage.

The Buddha always instructed us to never believe anything because he said it. He said  to test it against our reason and our experience, and if it works for us, – adopt it; if not – leave it aside’.
