We are family because we have similar karma – not the other way around

Screen Shot 2013-03-12 at 9.27.18 AMI once asked my teacher why my sons and I had so many similar tendencies and things happen in our lives…He said:

“You are family because you have similar karma — you are not having the experiences you are because you are family.”

So many people blame ‘how they are’ and ‘why they do what they do’ on things that happened in their past…They point to their parents, their significant other…etc.

We have the experiences we have, our tendencies and habits, due to actions we ourselves have taken in the past. Period.

Those of us with children know that each child is not a ‘blank slate’ when they come into this world. They have their very own likes, dislikes, dispositions, tendencies…This is due to previous karma. Karma simply means ‘action’ — all actions we take and have taken have their specific consequences.

And, they all have 3 things in common: they belong to the same ‘agent’ (whomever performs the act) they are of the same quality (kind, unkind) and they are of the same magnitude (if you push someone, you will not have someone shoot you in turn!!).

Now, karma needs for the conditions to be ripe for the effect to manifest…and we can never ‘go back’ and figure out what we did that caused what is happening now…Our view is narrow and shallow…we cannot ‘see’ far enough back – nor would we want to – truly!
