We have daily, monthly and yearly cycles; seasonal cycles; life stage cycles etc.
They all come into being (birth) go through imbalance (dis-ease) maturation (aging) and completion (death).
Looking at a person’s daily cycle, there are times of the day that are optimal for the elimination cycle; times that are best for eating to optimize digestion; times for recovery/rest etc.
A woman’s body has a taxing monthly cycle where the body prepares for a ‘house guest’ and then if ‘nobody’ arrives, it has to clear away all the preparations made.
When if comes to our personal yearly cycle, we start off our year with new excitement and towards the end of our year, we often get very reflective, even sick before our next birthday comes.
The life stage cycle is a longer cycle with 4 stages: the student stage, the householder stage, the retired stage, and the renunciant stage. Not all human beings go through all 4 stages – and monks or nuns for example often skip one or two. We would benefit greatly from contemplating the wisdom of these various stages and their ‘place’ in our personal life cycle.
In this world we live in, where there is not much allowance for these natural cycles to take place, we have to take it upon ourselves to slow down, rest, reflect, eat well and sometime simply retreat!
