Alaya vijana

Screen Shot 2014-06-04 at 8.20.21 AMIn Buddhism we speak of the alaya vijana – the ground consciousness. This is the ‘storehouse’ of all experiences, thoughts and feelings we have had since time immemorial.

In the west we often refer to this as the subconscious or unconscious mind– the self– and we pay quite a lot of attention to this, and give it a lot of weight in how we live our lives.

When people remember being famous in a past life, having spoken another language, written things they have no ‘clue’ where it came from–whatever the case might be…these are experiences that are bubbling up from this ‘storehouse’, that is very deep. This life is only a tiny film at the top, so just imagine the possibilities! Having said that, all that is there should be taken with a huge mountain of salt!

Consciousness implies duality; being conscious ‘of’ something, which already tells you that you are not directly perceiving anything. All that we perceive with our senses, is our very own mental representation of reality and by definition part. How can a part encompass the whole. Not possible.

As long as we have these bodies, we are not able to see reality ‘as it is’. We can have glimpses of it, but that is all.
