Nothing to do…

Screen Shot 2014-06-04 at 7.55.24 AMI have read and contemplated this ‘song’ by Milarepa many times — it is such a good reminder:

…nothing to do, Other than cease fixating on self.

It is funny how we can read or listen to something over and over, then at some point in time it has a more profound impact on us.

Most of us believe that if we do something big…travel to a place like Nepal and sit at the feet of some Master who speaks another language, we will truly ‘get there’ … wherever ‘there’ is for us. Most often we have not even considered what ‘there’ looks like, or what we will do when we get ‘there’…

Well, Milarepa did not travel anywhere to get enlightened. He stayed right where he was, in a cave, and worked on his own mind.

That is what it will take for all of us. Working with our own minds.

Everything we experience is experienced through our own senses — they are our very own mental projections of the reality we find ourselves at the center of.

And, since we are at the center of our own Universes, everything revolves around us.

Interesting – in the english language we put a capital letter on ‘I’ all the time – even in the middle of a sentence. Not so in most other languages…No wonder our egos are so BIG!

We have to walk our own path – nobody can walk it for us…and wherever we go, the same mind goes with us…no escaping that!

The spiritual path (in any legitimate tradition) can be reduced to three things:

Avoid harm. Do good. Purify the Mind.

— That is the teaching of All the Buddhas.

And, the first one to look at is what we should stop doing…..just that, would take care of a lot of our problems.

The Song of the Six Perfections states:

For generosity, nothing to do,

Other than cease fixating on self.

For morality, nothing to do,

Other than cease being dishonest.

For patience, nothing to do,

Other than not fear what is ultimately true.

For effort, nothing to do,

Other than practice continuously.

For meditative stability, nothing to do,

Other than rest in presence.

For wisdom, nothing to do,

Other than know directly how things are.

In the west, we’re so caught up in ‘doing something’ to ‘get somewhere’, and in the end…it doesn’t work. Thoughtfully put. Thank you for sharing!
